The Serenity Prayer

The Popular Prayer Among Support Groups Like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Alcoholics Anonymous – Bill Wilson's recovery.

The Serenity Prayer is a short prayer written by American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr during the 20th century. Originally delivered as a sermon by Niebuhr in church, it gained widespread popularity among support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and others focused on recovery from addictions and life’s challenges. This prayer offers a practical approach to facing life’s difficulties and serves as a spiritual and emotional tool for countless people worldwide.

Serenity Prayer:

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference."

Interpretation of the Serenity Prayer

God – The prayer is directed toward a higher power greater than any individual. It doesn’t demand belief in a specific religious deity but acknowledges the humility of recognizing that we are not in control of everything. Bill W., the founder of AA, once said to alcoholics, "I have two pieces of news: one good, one bad. The good news is there is a Higher Power; the bad news is it’s not you." In the 12-step approach, even the group itself can serve as a higher power, one that individuals can turn to for help in restoring sanity, ending compulsive behavior, obsession, and self-centeredness.

"Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change":

Many people feel haunted by their past, trying in vain to change past mistakes, experiences, traumas, missed opportunities, or years spent in ignorance. The key to recovery is learning to accept the following:

  • I cannot change the past.
  • I cannot change my identity.
  • I cannot, by force, change my personality.
  • I cannot choose different parents.
  • I cannot erase my sins.
  • I cannot change the fact that I have a mind afflicted by illness.
  • I cannot, in this moment, possess things I don’t have.
  • I cannot change my height.
  • I cannot change my children, my spouse, or many other things that govern our lives.

The aim of this part of the prayer is the acceptance of things with serenity, which is the essence of the 12-step program. Spiritual growth is reflected in one’s ability to accept life as it is, to accept oneself, the past, the present day, the temporary nature of life, our flaws, and everything beyond our control. Serenity is a spiritual value and signifies an awakening to the true nature of life, people, places, and things.

The core is about relationships—be it in marriage, parenting, friendships, or colleagues. We are asked to stop trying to change others and stop the existential battle, believing someone will change to fit our desires.

“Courage to change the things I can”:

Many people struggle to distinguish between what they can and cannot change, fearing they may waste energy trying to change the wrong things, which could lead to emotional setbacks and a return to harmful habits.

Understanding what we can change often requires feedback from people who know us well and can reflect whether our actions are driven by addiction, control, or a higher awareness beyond the ego.

In the early stages of recovery, courage is most needed in engaging fully in the program, rather than in other areas. The 12-step program suggests that the first year be devoted primarily to recovery, with courage focused on attending meetings, learning the steps, working with a sponsor, and engaging in the process of healing.

“And the wisdom to know the difference”:

This is a philosophical way of life rooted in discernment—the ability to use the 12 steps to live a spiritual life through constant observation and meditation. It’s about rising above addiction, impulses, flaws, and ego-driven desires. The constant challenge is discerning between our personal will and the greater will of the universe.

The great secret lies in letting go of personal will, which is often shaped by deficiencies, fears, resentments, anxieties, desires for power, and money. The divine will is always different, going beyond the narrow needs of an ego constantly living in trauma and distress.

May we always have the wisdom to discern.

The Serenity Prayer remains a guiding light for individuals in recovery, helping them navigate the delicate balance between acceptance, courage, and wisdom.
